This term in grade 2 we have been learning about Systems in CBL and answering the question “How does the earth work?”. We have investigated the following questions:
-What is a system?
-How do systems work?
-How does the earth support life?
-How do the changes in a system affect us?
-What would happen if a system stopped working?
We worked on a solution to the challenge
“Improve the way a community uses natural resources”.
We decided to write a song to tell people about how they could use Earth’s natural resources better.
We brainstormed, wrote, recorded and sung the song ourselves. We hope you enjoy it!
Listen to it and let us know what you think by commenting below.
You can listen to it here:
Check out our iBook so you can read our Fantastic Poems! It is called Fantastic Poems by 2B.
You should read it so you can be amazed at what we have been doing. We have been learning about similes, onomatopoeia, alliteration, adjectives, verbs and nouns.
We learnt about different types of poems, like free verse, simile poems, pair poems, cinquain poems and list poems.
You can download it for free from the iTunes store by typing in ‘Fantastic Poems 2B’ or you can click this link https://itunes.apple.com/au/book/fantastic-poems/id887001987?mt=11
Each week in 2B we conduct a spelling investigation to understand the sounds made by different combinations of letters.
This week we are looking at the sound “oo” – like the sound a monkey would make.
We will read the book “Would you rather…” by John Burningham to find some sounds.
WALT: find the letters that make the sound “oo”.
- Find words with the “oo” sound
- Sort words into different spellings
- Use this knowledge to read and write
This term in Challenge-Based Learning, we have been learning all about the big idea of ‘Systems’. We have mainly looked at these systems:
- The solar system
- The water cycle
- The plant growth system
Have a look at what we have learnt as we answer our guiding questions using Padlet.
From now on there will be a weekly update on the blog explaining what we will be learning throughout the week. You can use this to have a chat with your child about what they have been up to all day at school and you could have them show you some of it!
You can find it by clicking the “weekly update” tab on the blue menu at the top of the page.
Feel free to ask any questions about what we are learning by commenting on the blog or just feel free to come and visit the classroom!
Today at assembly our grade performed our rap about 3D shapes with 2C. Well done to Kate and Yilkan who did a great job of public speaking and talking about their 3D shapes. We made a little mistake at the end but it sounded great anyway and we had fun!

In 2B we have been busy learning about The Solar System because about CBL big idea is Systems.
So far we have learnt about how the Earth, Moon and Sun work together in the Solar System. We have learnt:
- How the earth spins around the sun to make the seasons and one whole year
- How the moon orbits around the earth
- How the earth spins in a circle to make day and night
We have also learnt about how the solar system affects us with its changes by creating seasons. We get cold weather and hot weather and cool weather. Some places get snow. In Spring some people get hayfever, in Summer days get longer and daylight savings begins. In Winter we wear thick clothes to keep us warm and in Summer we wear thin clothes to keep us cool.
We did an experiment to learn about the Solar System and how it works. We shone a torch on the earth to make sunlight and showed the movement of the earth and moon around the sun. We make our own mini solar systems with paper plates.
2B with our Solar Systems
Mason uses his solar system to show how Earth orbits the Sun.
Isabel shines the Sun onto the Earth to make day and night.
Did you try the lamp experiment? What did you notice?
Did you investigate your question about the Solar System?
What else have you noticed about day and night?
Look at our clustr map. We have some blog readers in the USA. What time of day do you think it is for them?
Add your findings to our padlet below by double tapping.
This week we made ANZAC biscuits with 2A. We have been learning about choosing great adjectives to describe nouns. We wrote a senses poem to describe our cooking experience. We hope you enjoy it!
Click here to go to the ANZAC Biscuit recipe we used.
Today we read a story called ANZAC Biscuits. It was about a girl called Rachel who loved her dad and mum. Her dad was an ANZAC soldier. Rachel made ANZAC biscuits for him made from treacle, flour and oats.
After reading the story we discussed who the ANZACs were and why they are important.
We created a shape poem that included words about ANZACs.
